The Hearing on the maritime dispute between Somalia and Kenya began at The Hague-based International Court of Justice (ICJ).
A Somali delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Mohamed Guled and lawyers hired by Somalia attended the hearing.
Somali Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Mohamed Guled delivers a sweeping speech at the maritime hearing saying Kenya is illegally claiming our seas, and indicated that Somalia is confident in the court’s decision.
He also added that Somalia want a formal border be established between the two countries.
The Kenyan delegation table was empty, as they did not show up and said yesterday they were not ready to participate in the hearing.
Mr. Mahdi Guled said he was sorry for Kenya’s absence, noting that the court had given Kenya enough time to prepare for the hearing.
He said Somalia had never requested a postponement of the trial but Kenya had requested it three times and the court accommodated them, this being a proof that Kenya was never ready to accept any court decision.
After that, Somalia’s lawyers proceeded with by presenting their arguments.
The Kenyan government has refused to attend the International Court of Justice (ICJ) hearing today, but the court has decided to continue the case as Somalia is ready to present its case.
