The Somali National Army has taken over responsibility for security in Afgoye district from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
A ceremony was held in Afgoye district of Lower Shabelle region, attended by officials including the Commander of the Armed Forces, General Mohamed Tahliil Bihi, the Deputy Commander of AMISOM, the Commander of the 12th Division of the Somali National Army, the Governor of Lower Shabelle and other officials.
The commander of the ground forces, General Tahliil, said that they are happy that AMISOM has taken over the security of Afgoye district today, thanking AMISOM for its role in maintaining security in Somalia.
General Shume, deputy commander of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), said the move was part of a transition plan that required the country’s armed forces to take over security responsibility.
The Somali government has made significant efforts to train and equip the Somali National Army to take over responsibility for security in the country.
