According to various credible sources, an agreement is being finalized to end the conflict in Gedo region. Former Jubaland Security Minister Abdirashid Hassan Nur Janan is expected to join the Somali Federal Government, cut ties with the Jubaland administration and be welcomed in Beled-Hawo.
Reports say that forces loyal to Jubaland security minister Abdirashid Janan will join the federal government forces in Beled-Hawo district in Gedo region.
Attempts to seize power in the Kenyan-backed Gedo region have failed, and relations with the Jubaland leader, Ahmed Madobe, have deteriorated lately.
This is a major blow to the plans of the Jubaland and Puntland leaders who were using their regional strongmen status to block federal elections.
Minister Janan, once a trusted Madobe’s lieutenant, had a fallout with the government, and was arrested at Aden Adde International Airport in August 2019, detained for several months in a NISA-run prison, and escaped on January 2020 in a questionable circumstances.
In a brief interview with the BBC, Abdirashid Janan confirmed that he previously had similar talks with the Somali government in Mogadishu and that no agreement had been reached.
Reports are circulating on social media that Abdirashid Janan has reached an agreement with the Federal Government of Somalia, following lengthy talks.
Mr. Janan provided further details on his ongoing talks with the Somali federal government in Gedo region.
It is not known whether the talks between the government and Abdirashid Janan will succeed, but the Jubaland security minister has been on the Somali-Kenyan border for some time.
According to recent reports, troops from the Jubaland administration stormed Mr. Janan’s house in Kismayo, searched and confiscated all items.
Witnesses said that heavily armed troops went up there, removed furniture, food supplies, ammunition, weapons and military uniforms belonging to the Jubaland Darawish.
The move comes after reports that he has held talks with the Somali government and that he will stationed in Beled-Hawo district as soon as tomorrow.
